Solar Energy

In National Renewable Energy Policy by Govt. of Bangladesh, there is a plan to produce 800 MW of electricity from renewable sources by 2015, where 500 MW will come from Solar Power.

Currently, power generation from various renewable technologies including solar, stands at a little less than 400MW. The government will have to spend an estimated Tk 9,000 crore to generate the additional 436MW if it wishes to stick to its plan. The 363.8MW that has so far been installed involved the private sector, which invested anywhere between 50 and 60 percent of project cost, with the remainder coming from the government.

Since many renewable technologies have become viable sources of generating electricity, particularly in rural and remote areas, application of solar rooftops must not be included as viable sources of alternative energy generation.

Solar energy is a renewable free source of energy that is sustainable and totally inexhaustible. It is also a non-polluting source of energy and it does not emit any greenhouse gases when producing electricity.

Solar PV (photovoltaic) system consists of an arrangement of several components, including solar panels to absorb and directly convert sunlight into electricity, Storage system like Batteries, , as well as mounting structure for Solar Panels, cabling and other electrical accessories to set-up a working system. The Solar hybrid system includes an Inverter to convert DC to AC.

Solar PV systems may be built in various configurations:

  • Grid-connected Solar PV System.
  • Off-grid or Stand alone Solar system with battery storage.
  • Hybrid system with battery storage, optionally converting to AC.
